How to Register for an Income Tax Number (SARS Guide)

Do You Need a Tax Number?

Anyone earning income—including freelancers, sole proprietors, trusts and companies—must register with SARS. New companies are automatically registered upon incorporation, but individuals and partnerships must do it themselves.

Steps for Registration

  1. Gather Required Documents
    • Proof of identity (ID book or passport).
    • Proof of address (utility bill or lease).
    • Bank account details.
  2. Register Online via eFiling
    • Create an account on SARS eFiling (www.sarsefiling.co.za).
    • Select “Register as a taxpayer” and follow the prompts.
    • Upload scanned copies of your documents for verification.
  3. Register via a SARS Branch
    • You can also register in person.
    • Complete the IT77 (Individuals) or IT77C (Companies) form.
    • Bring certified copies of your ID and proof of address.
  4. Receive Tax Number
    • SARS will issue your tax reference number by letter or SMS once registration is complete.
  5. Add Additional Taxes
    • If you run a business, register for additional taxes like VAT, PAYE or provisional tax via eFiling or at your nearest branch.

Tips

  • Register as soon as you start earning income to avoid penalties.
  • Keep your eFiling login details safe; this portal is essential for all future tax transactions.
  • If you run multiple businesses, each entity needs its own tax number.
